More about HDRI
Click below for more detailed info.
What’s so special about HDRI?
Most regular photos are saved using 8 bits for each 3 channels Red, Green and Blue for each pixel in the image ( 8 x 3 channels = total 24 bits). The 8 bits for each channel produce a combination of little over 16 million colors but only 256 shades of grey.
This is sufficient for many purposes such as holiday photos but it is very restricted in terms of light intensity since it only has 256 shades of grey or intensity from pure black to pure white.
What does it mean in reality?
In slightly over exposed photo that uses 8 bits per channel it is quite possible that both white wall and sun can be seen as pure white, in the photo both the sun and the white wall seem to have the same light intensity while in the real world we know that the intensity is quite different: looking at the wall feels pleasant but looking directly in to the sun is so intense that it hurts our eyes, that is because the light intensity of direct sunlight is so high.

The idea of High Dynamic Range Images (HDRI) is to store the full dynamic range of what is seen. HDRI images are saved using 32 bits for each channel bringing the amount of grey shades from 256 to mind boggling 4 294 967 296 shades and even beyond that when using 32 bits floating point values which literally can produce unlimited amount of grey shades. Converting a photo from 8 bits per channel to 32 bits per channel does not help though because the 8 bits per channel image does not have the information to start with, such conversion is like putting a small item to a bigger container that’s all.

For HDRI image to be a true HDRI image it both needs to be stored in a format supporting the HDRI such as Open EXR or HDR format but also it must be captured and prepared the right way so that it actually has all the dynamic range needed.

To but all this in simple terms the HDRI images store very accurately both the color and also the intensity of the light allowing even the exposure to be accurate adjusted in 3D application without loss of information. Because of this well made HDRI images can be used as background environments, extremely realistic and powerful light sources that provide both the ambient light and even the intensity of the sun and also as great sources for very realistic reflections. Often times using HDRI images in 3D graphics is the short cut to true photo realism!
